Wild poliovirus was eradicated in the Western Hemisphere
in 1991...

...however, an outbreak of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 occurred in the Dominican Republic and Haiti in July 2001

Reservoir countries include Bangladesh, Democratic Republic
of the Congo, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Angola, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, and Tajikistan1
Cases of vaccine-derived polio were recently reported in Haiti, Dominican Republic, and the Philippines2,3



 
CDC recommends
vaccination for1:

Adults who are traveling to polio-endemic areas and are unimmunized
Traveling adults whose vaccination status is unknown
Children at 2, 3, and 6 through 18 months of age and 4 through 6 years of age
